The NSW government on advice of CHO Kerry Chant has declared a “National Emergency” to ramp up the vaccination of the NSW population, and to change the discussion around the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the wider population.
The “National Emergency” recognizes that failure to contain the virus within NSW will have national implications.
We have gone from 14 days to flatten the curve to a State now unilaterally declaring a national emergency to increase vaccine uptake by putting the entire country on notice.
It is not clear whether the Prime Minister of Australia was notified.
Will declaring a “National Emergency” become popular amongst other State Premiers facing similar circumstances in the future?
