🚨Sunshine locals rally for a tougher response to crime in Victoria after hero shopkeeper is bashed to death by youths
Hundreds of locals packed Sunshine’s shopping strip today, demanding action after 60-year-old grocery store owner Van Viet Truong was bashed to death for stepping in to help fellow shopkeepers under attack.
Truong had run his store for more than 30 years. He intervened when youth criminals targeted nearby businesses. Days later he was dead in hospital.
A 15-year-old has been charged with manslaughter and remains in custody. But a 12-year-old boy and two 14-year-old girls charged with affray and intentionally causing serious injury were granted bail and released.
Organisers from the Vietnamese Mothers in Australia Community insisted it was not a political rally. But emotions ran raw. Resident after resident took the mic and slammed the government, police and judiciary for failing the community. Speakers told the crowd to take their anger to the ballot box in November.
